College degrees are necessary in many lines of work, such as in jobs within the medical field. But degrees are not always necessary for federal employees.
On Friday, President Trump met with members of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board in the East Room of the White House. Senior presidential adviser and first daughter, Ivanka Trump, co-chairs that board.
During the meeting, President Trump signed an executive order that aims to promote skill-based hiring for federal jobs. The president said, “Today, I’ll sign an executive order that directs the federal government to replace outdated… degree-based hiring with skills-based hiring. The federal government will no longer be narrowly focused on where you went to school but the skills and talents that you bring to the job.” He added that the administration has “looked at merit for a long time.”
Ivanka Trump said the executive order will allow the government to “better recognize the talents and competencies of all Americans” it hires.
Such a hiring practice will not prioritize those without degrees over those with degrees, but is rather intended to level the playing field for those who chose not to attend college or could not afford to go, but still have the skills to do the work.
More than two-thirds of Americans in the U.S. workforce do not hold a college degree, according to a report from the Economic Policy Institute.
